Dengue fever

Image
The term "dengue" is a Spanish attempt at the Swahilli phrase "ki denga pepo", meaning "cramp-like seizure caused by an evil spirit".

Dengue Fever is a viral infection passed by mosquitos (Aedes aegypti). It is epidemic in South America, Africa, South East Asia and even Australia.Dengue is manifested by a sudden onset of fever, with severe headaches, joint and muscular pains. (severe pain gives it the name break-bone fever).
The fever may resolve after a few days but can reappear, usually together with a rash.(It appears first on the lower limbs and the chest and in some patients it spreads to cover most of the body). Many of the infections are asymptomatic.
Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever is a severe disease that usually appears on the second time a person contracts Dengue. It is probably a cause of a severe immune system response that causes bleeding and shock (very low blood pressure).

The diagnosis is usually made on clinical and laboratory basis and the treatment is usually supportive (for pain and fever). Most of the cases are mild and healing is completed within a few days. In severe cases there is a need for admission and intensive care for complications of low blood pressure and bleeding.

There are a few ways which we can prevent dengue fever, the first is to use mosquito repellant and wear clothing which will cover your body. The second way is environmental; mosquitoes dwell in damp and wet places, so try to limit these types of areas around your home.

A vaccination for Dengue is currently being developed.

Wishing you all good health!!
